What makes a goal SMART

  • Specific: what exactly will be done, and by whom. Replace "improve" with the actual change.
  • Measurable: a number, percentage, or clear finish line that anyone could check.
  • Achievable: realistic with the time, skills, and resources available — name them.
  • Relevant: connected to a team or business priority, so it's worth the effort.
  • Time-bound: a due date or quarter, plus checkpoints for longer goals.

Keep active goals to about three to five per person — beyond that, focus suffers.
